#15/18 Blue Streaks Subdue Wittenberg for 4th Straight NCAC Win

John Carroll did not allow a Tiger first down in the first half

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – At the halfway point of North Coast Athletic Conference play, John Carroll is in perfect position.

The  #15/18 Blue Streaks steamrolled Wittenberg University at Edwards-Mauer Field, easily dispatching the Tigers, 44-7.

With a flawless 4-0 record in NCAC play, the Blue Streaks now look forward to a critical road showdown with #10/12 DePauw University next Saturday.

The Blue Streaks established dominance from the very start. John Carroll marched 14 plays for the first score of the game, as Colin Schuler completed the drive with a 22-yard field goal. John Carroll forced a quick three-and-out and wasted little time in adding the first touchdown of the game. On the second play of the drive, Nemo Jenkins dashed 62 yards for a score, the second 60+ yard TD rush of the season for the Florida native. JCU stood ahead after the first, 10-0.

A second straight Wittenberg three-and-out yielded another Blue Streak score. Running a flag route, Tyren Montgomery got open and hauled in a 27-yard Nick Semptimphelter strike for the 16-0 lead.

An unfruitful Wittenberg drive again gave JCU the chance to score, and the Blue Streaks did score. On the 10th play of the possession, Semptimphelter found a wide, wide open Shane Lindstrom on a drag route over the middle. The transfer wideout dashed into the end zone for a touchdown, adding to the lead, 23-0.

The Blue Streaks tacked on one more touchdown before the break. Semptimphelter hit Montgomery on a fly route off playaction, good for a 16-yard touchdown. JCU enjoyed a 30-0 advantage at the break.

Wittenberg's initial drive of the second half at last brought a first down for the Tigers, the first of the afternoon for the hosts. The drive stalled at the JCU 40-yard line, as the visitors could not convert a 4th and 9.

The Blue Streaks chewed plenty of clock on the ensuing drive, using over eight minutes to march 60 yards. Quincy Newsom caught a pass out of the backfield from Semptimphelter for a 9-yard touchdown and a 37-0 lead.

JCU added its final points early in the fourth quarter. Lamar Thomas charged in for an interception at the Wittenberg 30-yard line, and tiptoed the sidelines, avoiding a pair of Tigers en route to the end zone. His 70-yard pick six marked his first collegiate touchdown and second career interception.

The Tigers managed to spoil the shutout late, but it didn't matter much in the end result.

Semptimphelter, the top QB in NCAA Division III completion percentage, showed out as a model of efficiency once again. The grad student completed 26-of-30 passes for 249 yards and 4 touchdowns. Tyren Montgomery finished with 12 catches for 122 yards and 2 TDs.

On the ground, JCU notched 222 rushing yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Wittenberg mustered just 44 rushing yards and 10-of-21 passing for 124 yards. Overall, JCU outgained Wittenberg, 478-168. JCU did not need to punt all day. Impressively, JCU converted 12-of-14 third downs, while the Tigers cashed in on just 2-of-9.

Defensively, Jacob Hufnagel and Kenny Grobolsek topped the Streaks with 6 tackles. Nathaniel Hendrix tallied a sack.
