Tyren Montgomery Secures Spot on D3football.com Team of the Week

| By:

Montgomery is JCU's first wideout to make the team since Frank Ross

A legacy performance has garnered a high honor for John Carroll's star wideout.

Thanks to his clutch catch with darkness descending on Greencastle, Indiana, the second-year Blue Streak is making national headlines.

Tyren Montgomery has secured a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week following his game-winning catch at #11/9 DePauw University.

Making the D3football.com Team of the Week is not a rarity for the Blue Streaks, but it's difficult to do. A total of 32 Blue Streaks have made the team previously, plus three offensive line groups. Of the previous honorees, only three have been wideouts.

The last JCU wide receiver to make the cut? A familiar name: Frank Ross. The timing is impeccable, as Ross will be enshrined in the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend.

Montgomery reeled in 12 catches for 109 yards as Nick Semptimphelter's top target. The Woodlands, Texas native caught three touchdown passes from Semptimphelter, often in the midst of heavy DePauw coverage. The final score occurred with just 14.4 seconds left on the clock, the game-winning grab in a 31-27 classic at DePauw with rain and darkness to contend with.

The standout wide receiver is continuing his attack on the JCU recordbooks. Montgomery is now tied for second in program history with 27 receiving touchdowns, alongside another transfer, Aramis Greenwood (27 in 2012-14). Montgomery also tops the NCAC in both receiving yards (741) and TDs (10) this season. His 59 catches are also just outside the top 10 in single-season history, just 10 away from Ross' single-season record of 69.

Another fun fact: Montgomery became JCU's first receiver in program history to notch 12 receptions in three games in a single season. Montgomery is the third Blue Streak to notch 12 catches in a game three times in his career, joining Ross and Hank Durica.

Montgomery and the Blue Streaks have three games remaining in the regular season. With a 5-0 record in North Coast Athletic Conference play, JCU is in the driver's seat.

Next up is Homecoming on Saturday, as the #13 Blue Streaks host the College of Wooster for a 1:05 pm kickoff.
