Volleyball Stumbles at Wittenberg in Battle of NCAC Unbeatens

The Blue Streaks scuffled in a disappointing 3-set loss

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – In a dual between the final two undefeated teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference, John Carroll Volleyball felt the brunt of a determined Wittenberg University squad.

Fresh off a victory over #21 Otterbein, the Tigers dominated from start to finish in a rare Tuesday evening showdown.

John Carroll lost a sweep by set scores of 20-25, 18-25, 10-25.

The 3-set loss is not a familiar spot for the Blue Streaks. This is just the second sweep loss of the year, the last one being a decision to William Smith College back on September 20.

The early tidings looked positive for the visitors, with JCU getting out to a slim 9-8 lead. The Tigers responded with a strong 5-point run before JCU provided a 6-1 answer, with kills by Mary Kate Sheehan, Natalie Glowe, and Grace Jones. But the momentum pingponged back to the Tigers with a 4-point run to storm ahead, 20-16. JCU never got within two points the rest of the set.

Once again, JCU got out to a narrow lead early, 6-4, but once the Tigers snuck ahead, 8-6, the hosts never again trailed. The Blue Streaks strung together a couple points here and there, but not enough to overcome a stout Wittenberg front line. JCU trailed by three late, 21-18, but the Tigers closed it out with ease.

In the third set, John Carroll had no answers. The Tigers utterly dominated the visitors at the net, notching 14 kills and 0 errors for an impeccable .438 attack percentage.

Natalie Glowe topped the team with 8 kills. Tess Humphrey managed 13 assists. Olivia Mogyordy tabbed 17 digs.
