Julia Gulla Earns the Nod as NCAC Women's Golfer of the Week

Julia Gulla set her own record while winning medalist honors at the JCU Fall Invitational

CLEVELAND – Not many golfers are having a better fall than Julia Gulla. 

The first year Blue Streak is on an absolute tear, breaking a lon-standing John Carroll Women's Golf record not once, but three times.

As a result, Gulla is the North Coast Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for the third time this season.

This weekend, Gulla steered the ship for the Blue Streaks at the John Carroll Fall Invitational. The Nordonia grad showcased strong swing decisions and skill on a Manakiki Golf Course that's known for being difficult, especially so when the greens are dry and play fast due to a lack of recent rain.

Saturday's opening round was challenging at times, as the Sagamore Hills native carded a 79, four back of first place after day one. But on Sunday, Gulla made her mark.

The rookie starred with an outstanding round that included four birdies. Gulla carded an unreal 72, an even par round on the very difficult Donald Ross-designed track. No doubt about it, Gulla's mastery of the course on the second day was impressive.

While earning medalist honors, Gulla broke her own record, shaving one stroke off of her previous best on September 7. The medalist trophy is the fourth in her collection early in her Carroll career. 

Much of her success this weekend can be attributed to her excellent short game. As Head Coach Missy Gedeon noted, Gulla avoided any three puts, showing strong decision-making and patience while avoiding any negative holes.

Gulla's leadership aided JCU's fourth-place effort, yet another strong showing for a young Blue Streaks team on the rise due to the outstanding first-year class in the program.

Next up for Gulla and the Blue Streaks is a trip to Wittenberg on October 20-21 for the Jeff Roope Invitational.
