Montgomery garnered Second Team honors, becoming JCU's 3rd WR ever to be honored

WACO, TEX. — One of the best seasons (some might say the best season) by a receiver in John Carroll Football history deserves a prestigious accolade.

For just the third time in program history, a JCU wideout has earned All-American honors.

Tyren Montgomery is a Second Team AFCA All-American, as announced today by the American Football Coaches Association.

The Woodlands, Texas native is in the midst of the best statistical season by a receiver in the history of Blue Streak football. In the context of the historic season, Montgomery's stats are only part of his story, as well.

Montgomery has become the top target in a passing offense that leads the nation in completion percentage and ranks top-10 in passing efficiency. Quarterback Nick Semptimphelter, a candidate for the Gagliardi Trophy, has relied heavily on Montgomery to power the offense. And for good reason.

Montgomery has caught nearly everything that has been thrown his way this season, standing first in program history and second in NCAA Division III with 100 receptions. Earlier this year, Montgomery broke the previous school record of 69 catches, held by recent Hall of Fame inductee Frank Ross (2009). His 8.33 receptions per game also rank eighth nationally.

Once the ball is in his hands, Montgomery does big-time damage. The graduate student recently broke the school record for receiving yards, now standing at 1,266 on the year, surpassing the previous mark of 1,126 set by Marshall Howell in 2014. Montgomery rates fifth in NCAA Division III in receiving yards at the moment.

No stranger to the end zone, Montgomery has 14 receiving touchdowns on the year. The star is tied for second in program history with Marshall Howell (2014), three behind the record that the Texan set last year.

In the JCU record books, Montgomery now stands second in receiving touchdowns (31) as well as third all-time in both receptions (157) and receiving yards (2,337) at John Carroll.

In each game this season, Montgomery has tallied at least five catches, including four games with 10 or more receptions. He has notched 59 or more receiving yards in every game this year, with four games above 100 yards. He's reached the end zone in nine of 12 games. Twice this year he earned the North Coast Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week award, and he made the D3football.com Team of the Week after hauling in a game-winning reception late at #11/9 DePauw.

Montgomery joins Marshall Howell (2014) and Aramis Greenwood (2015) as JCU's only AFCA All-American wideouts. John Carroll has now been represented on the AFCA Division III Coaches' All-America list 16 times by 17 players since its inception in 1972.

The AFCA's Division III All-America Selection Committee is made up of head coaches representing each conference from each of the AFCA's seven districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.
