Men's Basketball Impresses in Home Opener, Firing Past Saint Vincent

Mike Lamirand enjoyed a career day in the victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The last time that John Carroll Men's Basketball stepped onto Mike Moran Court in front of a home crowd, the Blue Streaks won a title. Today's team did not end the evening with a trophy, but on a show nonetheless.

The Blue Streaks dominated in a wire-to-wire home opener at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center against the Saint Vincent College Bearcats, who finished last year at 20-6.

John Carroll advances to 5-0 on the year with the 104-79 win over the Bearcats, a member of the Presidents Athletic Conference.

From the start, the Blue Streaks were hot from downtown. A Kyle Irwin 3-pointer in the first minute set the tone for a game filled with triples. Another Irwin three set the lead at 8-0 three minutes into the game before the Bearcats could lace their shoes. A Jack Zapolnik trey placed the lead at 12-3 heading into the first media timeout. Turnovers harmed the Bearcats, as JCU stood ahead, 21-9, entering the second media break.

Mike Lamirand and Sean Collins took over the game for a while with excellent offense. Collins created space inside and Lamirand heated up from deep, stretching the advantage to 37-13. Lamirand stayed hot as the half continued, with Luke Chicone getting his buckets, too. JCU stood in full control after 20 minutes, 55-26.

Back-to-back Kasey Hunt jumpers opened the second half and Collins sank a layup to up the lead to 35. Saint Vincent began to find a little offense, but even at the second media timeout, the Blue Streaks were fully in the driver's seat with a 76-49 advantage.

Down the stretch, the Bearcats scored some to keep it from getting overly out of hand, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Mike Lamirand finished with a game-high 21 points and a team-high 6 rebounds. Jack Zapolnik followed with 16 points, and Luke Chicone tallied 15 plus an impressive 6 assists.

"Warmups felt really good," said Lamirand. "I didn't think they were pressuring me enough and I felt like I couple shoot over them. In the past couple of weeks, my teammates have been telling me to shoot the ball whenever I'm open. They've been giving me a lot of confidence in practice. We're playing good team basketball. We all trust each other a lot. We haven't really played with each other a lot, but we're all good friends. We trust each other, we want each other to succeed, and we want the team to succeed."
