Blue Streaks Suffer First Defeat Of Season In Loss To #24 Ohio Wesleyan At Home

#24 OWU beat JCU in the NCAC opener for the Blue Streaks

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll women's basketball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan this evening.

The seventh-ranked Blue Streaks are coming off of a strong win last week on Tuesday, November 25th, defeating the 15th ranked Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets to remain unbeaten.

Their undefeated streak would come to an end as the Blue Streaks lost in a tough battle at home to Ohio Wesleyan by a final score of 63-65.

It took awhile for both teams to get a rhythm going, but two quick shots from the Bishops would start the first quarter of action. Ohio Wesleyan continued to extend their lead. Layups from Carly Perusek and Kaylie McKenny would end the quarter down by seven points to get things going for the JCU offense.

Ohio Wesleyan picked up where they left off and started with a 6-0 run to begin the second quarter of play. As the Blue Streaks continue to find answers, a Nicci Finazzo layup with a foul would help the team get within eight points. That momentum continued with a Brooke Laub three pointer, resulting in OWU calling their first timeout of the game.

Both teams traded baskets late in the second quarter, but the Battling Bishops were able to maintain a comfortable lead going into halftime by a score of 20-30.

Coming out of halftime, JCU needed to find that spark. That they did as a Carly Perusek three pointer would open up the scoring for the game in the second half, followed by a Carmen Hueker jumper to cut their deficit to five points.

A few costly turnovers would limit both teams from making crucial plays, but OWU was able to answer back John Carroll's run with a pair of baskets.

The Blue Streaks fought right back to gain that momentum. Two turnovers from Ohio Wesleyan would allow Graci Septimphelter to score a pair of layups to cut OWU's lead to three.

From then on, it was a battle. Ohio Wesleyan managed to get to the free throw line and score a pair of free throws to lead 37-42. That didn't phase JCU. The team earned their first lead of the game with a basket from Brooke Laub to end the third quarter.

The energy was picking up in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center as Brooke Laub came back and scored back-to-back three pointers to help maintain that lead for the Blue Streaks early in the fourth quarter.
OWU answered with a run of their own by earning trips to the free throw line, as well as scoring a couple of baskets to tie the game at 54.

The game was coming down to the wire. A three pointer from Erin McCormick would allow the Blue Streaks to earn their lead back, which then led to Carmen Heuker making a crucial play under the basket to earn the three-point play with a foul.

After earning two free throws back, possessions switched immediately as OWU came down the stretch and made plays to secure the lead back from the Blue Streaks with a three-pointer from Nora Johns to take a 60-61 lead.

The Blue Streaks responded with trips to the free throw line to tie the game at 63 with eight seconds to go, but a jumper from Ohio Wesleyan's Kendall Dieringer would secure the victory for the Bishops with limited time on the clock with 0.8 seconds in the game.

Time wasn't enough as the Blue Streaks suffered defeat in their first NCAC matchup of the year.

Leading in scoring for JCU was Carly Perusek with 12 points, five assists, and three defensive rebounds. Carmen Heuker earned 11 points with 3 assists and steals, while Brooke Laub also scored 11 points.
