Semptimphelter Steers Women's Basketball Past SUNY Brockport

Graci Semptimphelter enjoyed a career, record-breaking evening

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Sometimes you just need a get-right game.

Following a heartbreaker home loss to #24 Ohio Wesleyan, #8 John Carroll Women's Basketball righted the ship with a dominant victory at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

In large part thanks to a Graci Semptimphelter legacy game, the Blue Streaks strolled to a 96-70 win over SUNY Brockport.

After a topsy-turvy shooting day the last time out, John Carroll came out of the gate swinging. JCU showed no fear, particularly Semptimphelter. The star guard enjoyed a hot hand from the jump and never let up.

The Tennessean converted 9-of-16 shots from downtown, setting the program 3-point record. The previous program best of eight 3-pointers was held by Emilee Ritchie, accomplished at Mount Union on December 8, 2010. Semptimphelter led all scorers with 35 points, a collegiate career high.

"I feel good, I'm thankful for my teammates who got me the ball," said Semptimphelter. "I'm thankful to be here on this team, a lot of gratitude. We're all hungry after Wednesday. We're ready to roll and keep moving. We just need to stay hungry."

Alongside Semptimphelter, Ava Ryncarz got going. With Katie Puletti providing a triple to help the cause, JCU roared for a 10-0 run in a 90-second stretch late in the quarter. JCU stood ahead, 35-19, entering the second quarter. The lead never dipped below double digits from there.

JCU's offense went cold in the first few minutes of the second stanza, so the hosts burned a timeout. Coming out of the break, Carmen Heuker scored on a friendly bounce to get things back on track.

That nice stroke of luck set off an avalanche for John Carroll, as the hosts erupted for a 16-2 run in the next six minutes. JCU stood in full control at the break, 51-28.

The Blue Streaks largely cruised the rest of the contest. In the fourth quarter, Semptimphelter was put on record watch. And with 4:49 left in the game, fo the delight of her teammates, Semptimphelter set the single-game JCU record with her ninth triple of the ballgame.

A media timeout shortly thereafter gave her the proper send-off as her teammates mobbed her coming off the court.

John Carroll got to play everybody in the final minutes. Erin McCormick hit a nice 3-pointer and Hannah Ward netted a pair of her own. Lilly Stukus got in on the fun, too.

Besides Semptimphelter's exceptional day, Ava Ryncarz notched 17 points. Katie Puletti tabbed 10 points and Kaylie McKenney had a perfect shooting day to finish with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

As a team, JCU set program records for 3-pointers made (18) and attempted (44). JCU previously set the standard last year vs. the Golden Eagles with a 17-of-40 stat line from 3-point range.
