Women's Wrestling Wraps Up Season at Regionals

| By:

Delaney Burns became JCU's first two-time Regional placer

TIFFIN – The sophomore season of John Carroll Women's Wrestling came to a close on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks placed three wrestlers at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) Region 4 Tournament, but failed to send anyone to Nationals.

Sumayyah Kemp notched fifth place at 131, Delaney Burns tabbed sixth place at 124, and Emily Leeseberg nabbed sixth at 117.

Wrestling in the all-division championship, JCU's grapplers faced off with many Division II programs (the top four teams in the region are members of NCAA Division II). So, the competition was certainly fierce. John Carroll finished in 10th place as a team.

Kemp opened with a fortuitous start, firing up a first-period pin in 1:14. The Clevelander followed it up with a 10-0 tech fall in 2:57. However in the semifinal, Kemp lost via 14-2 tech fall to drop into the consolation bracket. She battled into position to still qualify for Nationals, pinning her first consolation foe. However, she could not win the fourth-place bout to punch her ticket. She did, however, finish on a high note by winning her fifth-place consolation match.

Burns found herself behind the eight-ball at the start with a first-round defeat. But she fought forward in the consolations, including with a pin of teammate Riley Duffey. But a loss via pin and then a tough 4-1 decision forced her to settle for sixth.

On a bright note for JCU, Burns becomes JCU's first two-time Regional placer, as the Riverside, Illinois native finished fourth last year.

Emily Leeseberg stumbled in a 12-7 decision for starters, dropping to the 117 consolations. A pair of pins put her in position to duel for fourth place. However, a pin dropped her out of contention, and she later lost her fifth-place consolation contest to settle for sixth.

John Carroll will look to continue progressing and adding talent, with a keen eye on a bright future.
