Blue Streaks Survive Scare vs Quakers

WILMINGTON - The John Carroll women's basketball team traveled to Wilmington College for an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) battle and held off a hungry Wilmington squad by defeating the Quakers 72-70.

With the score tied 70-70 and 25 seconds to go, Wilmington had possession with the shot clock turned off and seemingly having the option for the final shot or to go to overtime.

However, Graci Semptimphelter deflected a pass that was entering the post and earned the steal. The Franklin, TN. native drew a foul and went to the charity stripe and nailed a pair of free throws to give John Carroll a two-point edge.

Following a Wilmington timeout, with 10 seconds to go, the Quakers attempted a long distance three, which missed off the back iron. A long rebound went into the hands of Gabby Russell who attempted a mid-range jumper but left it short.

Alaiya Meaux secured the offensive rebound under the hoop and attempted the game-tying layup, but strong interior defense by the Blue Streaks forced a miss and JCU earned the conference victory with the final buzzer going off.

Earlier this week, Semptimphelter set a career-high of 20 points against Mount Union. The junior set a new career-high with 21 points and tallied four steals.

Carly Perusek was dominant on the glass and matched a career-high 14 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end.

The John Carroll depth was on display, as the JCU bench outscored Wilmington 28-2. Kaylie McKenney led the bench with 13 points and nine rebounds and Abigail Rosol added seven points.

With the win John Carroll improves to 16-5, 10-4 (OAC) and get ready for a showdown Wednesday night, as they travel across town to face #11 Baldwin Wallace who has won 18-straight games. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
