Sumayyah Kemp helped to steer the Streaks with a fourth-place effort

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – For the final time this season, John Carroll Women's Wrestling competed at home.

The Blue Streaks hosted the first John Carroll Women's Wrestling Open at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Sunday.

John Carroll enjoyed a solid day with five placers. Emily Leeseberg and Sumayyah Kemp notched fourth-place efforts, Jordan Palmer and Delaney Burns tabbed fifth-place finishes, Riley Duffey tagged sixth, and Meghan Edwards checked in at seventh.

Results

Emily Leeseberg did nice work in the 117 bracket. The first year grappler dropped a 9-5 decision to start, but rebounded impressively. The Gahanna, Ohio native roared for back-to-back-to-back wins by pin to fire into the third-place match. The Gahanna Lincoln grad ran out of steam there, losing via a tech fall, but still should be plenty proud of bouncing back with three straight wins.

Sumayyah Kemp fired into the 131 semifinals on a roll. The Clevelander kicked things off with a 10-0 tech fall, followed by a pin win. However, a narrow 4-2 decision dropped her out of the running for the title, and she would later settle for fourth.

Delaney Burns soared into the 124 semifinal, thanks to an 11-1 tech fall. The sophomore then experienced two 10-0 tech falls, however, so she wound up in fifth. Also at 124, Riley Duffey rocketed into the other semifinal, propelled by an opening win via pin. Unfortunately, a tech fall and then an injury defeat dropped her to sixth place.

Jordan Palmer got the ball rolling nicely at 145. The sophomore scored a 10-0 tech fall and a 16-8 decision to clinch a spot in the semifinal. Back-to-back tech fall losses sent her into the fifth-place bout, and the North Canton native ended the day with a very nice pin.

Meghan Edwards quickly dropped into the consolation bracket with an opening loss, but did solid work thereafter. The Lewiston, NY native corralled a 16-6 tech fall and then a pin. But a loss dropped her into the seventh-place bout, which she won via forfeit.
