Blue Streaks Drop Two at Pioneer Classic in Kentucky

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – Following a sterling start, John Carroll Softball has run into some strong competition.

The Blue Streaks dropped a pair of games on Friday at the Pioneer Classic, hosted by Transylvania University.

John Carroll lost to host Transylvania, 5-0, and then to Anderson University (IN), 8-2. JCU drops to 6-4 with the defeats.

Game 1
The opening game of the tournament presented a stout challenge. Transylvania finished with a 35-10 record a season ago, making an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Transylvania certainly played like a postseason contender, as the Pioneers' pitching staff held JCU's bats at bay for the entirety of the game.

Danielle Orendi matched Transy's starter excellently in the first four innings. In the bottom of the fourth, a 1-out Melissa Smith double chased the Pioneers' starter. But the bullpen quickly stunted JCU's start with a pair of groundouts.

In the fifth, the Pioneers at last broke through. Back-to-back basehits to start the frame portended trouble, and a JCU error allowed both runs to score. The floodgates opened from there, and by the time the dust settled, the hosts enjoyed a 5-0 advantage. JCU would not muster a comeback.

Smith, Abby Farber, and Kendall Trunzo all mustered hits for JCU.

Game 2
Anderson got out to a quick start and never looked back. A 2-run shot opened the door in the first, and a 5-inning explosion in the second put it out of reach.

But JCU did not quit. Elizabeth Hohlefelder led off the fourth with a single, and soon came around to score. Smith belted a 2-run bomb over the fence in centerfield to trim the deficit.

Casey Cash and Emily Graves held the Ravens at bay the rest of the way, but Anderson won the day.

Trunzo and Smith both finished with a hit, the lone two Streaks to tally one in both games. Sophia Heidrich also tabbed a hit in the second game.

Next Up
Weather permitting, John Carroll will play two more games in Kentucky tomorrow. JCU is slated to face Elmhurst University at 10 am and Carnegie Mellon University at 12:15 pm.
