Men's Lacrosse Holds on for Win over Marietta to Start OAC Action

The Blue Streaks fended off a scrappy Pioneers team

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The ending wasn't as crisp as they would have liked, but the Blue Streaks finished the job.

John Carroll Men's Lacrosse began Ohio Athletic Conference play with a victory at Don Shula Stadium on Saturday.

While the Pioneers threatened late, JCU held on for a 13-11 victory to start league play on a high note.

On a chilly day in University Heights, the Pios scored six straight goals over an 18-minute stretch, making for a frenetic final seven minutes of the game. But John Carroll scored a critical insurance goal with five minutes left and played strong down the stretch to ensure a key OAC victory.

Braden Zarek started the scoring just 50 seconds into the game. Richard Moran scored JCU's second goal on a soft shot set up by a Zarek pass. Marietta did tie the game shortly after, but John Carroll became aggressive on clears. Noah Osmanski and Nicholas Yemma got the lead back for JCU, catching Marietta napping with a pair of empty-net goals.

Zarek then got hot, dancing around and scoring a couple goals, the latter with just 9 seconds left on a nice move. JCU enjoyed a 6-2 advantage after the first period.

The Pioneers did get back on the board early in the second, though JCU replied with a pair of goals. Sean Keane earned a tally less than a minute later, and then Larry Voss took a Zarek pass home for an 8-3 lead. Marietta did get back in it with a pair of goals, but then Zarek got hot again.

The sophomore extraordinaire hit a bounce pass from X to a waiting Moran. The Chicagoan then roared it past the goalie. Then, Zarek took a turn for the scoring party, finding an opening in transition and hitting a lefty shot.

Casey LaForce fired home a pass from Sean Hogan to start the half, but from there, it was almost all Marietta. The Pioneers closed the gap to 12-9 at the end of the third quarter, and then to 12-11 with 7:21 to go in the fourth quarter.

But the Blue Streaks managed to clamp down on defense enough to open the way. Soon after a 30-second man-up, JCU's patience in looking for the right look paid off. Zarek fed William Dunn for a ripper and a bigtime insurance goal.

The teams traded chances in the final minutes, but JCU enjoyed much of the possession time and killed enough clock to hold on.

Braden Zarek was without question the offensive superstar for John Carroll. The Bloomfield Hills, Michigan native accumulated 4 points and 4 assists in an outstanding effort. Richard Moran's hat trick also proved to be critical. Eight other players tabbed a point.

Nicholas Yemma and Camden Uchic tied for the team lead with 5 groundballs. Casey LaForce helped the defense with 3 caused turnovers. In cage, Devin Holder made 8 saves.

Next Up
John Carroll will hit the road on Wednesday, bound for Heidelberg University and a 7 pm matchup.
