Outstanding Start Continues with Fifth Straight Win for Women's Lacrosse

JCU's defense has been nothing short of fantastic this season

CLEARWATER, Fla. – While many Northeast Ohioans woke up to snow on the ground, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse woke up to warm weather in Florida.

The Blue Streaks seemed to enjoy the sunny conditions in the second game of the Florida trip, thundering past Chatham University, 11-5.

Before today, only twice before in the previous 10 seasons of JCU Women's Lacrosse had the Blue Streaks started 5-0. In 2018, JCU began the year with 8 straight wins. In 2021, JCU roared for 13 consecutive wins for starters.

Today also marked a nice milestone. For the first time in program history, JCU has not allowed any of its first five opponents reach a double-digit goal total.

The first portion of the opening quarter was quiet on the scoring front. Abby Cassidy registered the first goal of the game at the midway mark with 7:10 remaining, firing home a pass from Anna Spitzer. Fellow first-year Kenzie Krom scored second just under the four-minute mark. While Chatham got on the board with 1:16 to play, JCU provided a nice answer, as Samantha Usterbowski fired home a pass from Spitzer just 15 seconds later. The Clevelanders led after one, 3-1.

Riley Knapp penciled in a free-position goal early in the second quarter. Just past the midpoint of the period, Cassidy and Spitzer linked up again. Just 30 seconds later, Cassidy scored a woman-up goal to extend the margin to 6-1, leading to a Chatham timeout. The break did not work for the Cougars, as Kathleen Cagney quickly fired hom a free-position goal. Chatham ended the run there with a goal, but Knapp provided a first-half finisher off a Lauren Schwartz assist to set the margin at 8-2 at the break.

Cassidy's cascade of goals continued to start the third, aided by Knapp. Chatham did notch the next two goals, keeping hope of a comeback with the score at 9-4 after three.

A comeback did not materialize, in part due to an early Krom goal in the fourth quarter. Spitzer socred with under a minute to play for good measure.

Cassidy helmed the offense with 4 goals, also providing a pair of caused turnovers. Spitzer tied her for the team lead with 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists). Meghan Weiner topped the team with 4 GBs. In cage, Rachel Kroeger tallied 6 saves with a save percentage north of .500. The defense played a game the coaching staff could sure be proud of, limiting the Cougars to just 15 shots.

Knapp's statline also aided JCU's cause, with 2 goals, 1 assists, 3 groundballs, and 1 caused turnover.
