Softball Stacks Two More Wins on Thursday

JCU defeated Mount Mary University and Concordia University Chicago

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The train keeps on rolling for John Carroll Softball.

The Blue Streaks added two more tallies to the win column on Thursday, remaining undefeated at 6-0. In terms of a fast start, that's impressive, as the last time JCU fired out to a 6-0 mark, the year was 2012.

John Carroll won a pair of games in easy fashion at the Space Coast Spring Games in Florida at the Space Coast Complex, defeating Mount Mary University, 11-0, and Concordia University Chicago, 6-2.

Game 1
A fantastic start set the tone for the opening game against Mount Mary, as JCU batted around in the bottom of the first inning.

Leadoff hitter Kaylyn Odelli lined a triple to center to start the offense for JCU. A Katherine Nativio single and a Kendall Trunzo single soon loaded the bases. Izzy Coode walked to send home the first run of the day, and Alyssa McPeek quickly scored two more on a 2-run single to center. A Melissa Smith single sent another home. RBI singles by Isa Crespo and Odelli skyrocketed the lead to 6-0 after one.

Melissa Smith padded the lead with a solo shot in the second, and the Blue Streaks put it far out of reach in the third. A 2-run Odelli double, a Laney Karpowicz RBI single, and an Elaina Rodriguez RBI hit set the margin at 11 runs, which stood the rest of the way.

Emily Graves got the start in the circle and pitched three scoreless innings for the win. Kaylinn Samuelraj finished things out well for the Blue Streaks.

Odelli finished a perfect 3-for-3 for the game, while both Crespo and Smith managed multi-hit games.

Game 2
The top of the order's onslaught continued in the top of the first of the nightcap. Odelli walked to open the frame and Trunzo soon tripled to score the game's first run. Concordia Chicago did even things out in the bottom of the first, though.

After Kristin Dems settled in, the Blue Streaks recaptured the lead in the fourth frame. Norah Bradley's RBI single did the trick, and JCU never again trailed. JCU made sure of that with a bigtime sixth inning.

Coode walked and McPeek singled to start the trouble. Smith doubled to center to plate Coode, and then Bradley singled to left to score McPeek. While the Cougars went to the bullpen, it didn't matter. A Concordia error allowed another run to score, cementing the JCU lead at 5-1.

The teams traded runs in the seventh (a Smith single scored JCU's tally) but Dems finished it out. The Mentor native's impressive week continues, as the sophomore has allowed just 1 earned run across 14 innings of work.

Smith and Bradley combined for 6 of JCU's 11 hits, with Trunzo also collecting a multi-hit day.

Next Up
John Carroll will finish out the Florida trip with two final games tomorrow at the Space Coast Complex. JCU will face the University of Dubuque at 4:45 pm and Misericordia University at 7 pm.
