Softball Surrenders Pair of Losses to Close Out Florida Trip

The Blue Streaks lost both games by 1 run

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The lengthy winning streak to start the season came to an end on Friday for John Carroll Softball but there's no shame in the strong start for the Blue Streaks.

The Blue & Gold dropped a pair of 1-run losses on Friday, dropping to a still-impressive 6-2 record for the Florida trip.

John Carroll wrapped up the Space Coast Spring Games at the Space Coast Complex by losing to University of Dubuque, 4-3, and Misericordia University, 7-6.

Game 1
In a reversal of fortunes from previous games, the Blue Streaks fell into an early hole against Dubuque. The Spartans plated a run in both the first and second innings for a quick lead they never relented.

John Carroll did threaten to even things out in the second, however. With 2 outs, Izzy Coode singled to center to score Alyssa McPeek. But Dubuque escaped to remain ahead, 2-1.

The Spartans plated a pair in the third, upping the advantage to 4-1. Casey Cash settled things for the next three innings, pitching three innings of scoreless relief to give JCU time for a comeback. And the Streaks nearly did.

An inning-opening error allowed JCU to get a quick runner aboard in the seventh. Dubuque did get two outs, but Melissa Smith doubled to center to score the run. Norah Bradley then slotted a single to left center to cross Smith. But the Spartans wrapped things up there, escaping with the 4-3 decision.

Game 2
Spurred on by the opening defeat, John Carroll roared to start up the second contest. Leadoff hitter Kaylyn Odelli walked to open the game and quickly came around to score. Coode kept up the momentum with an RBI single, and a Misericordia extended the inning and the lead to 3-0. After a double in the second, Odelli came around to score again on a McPeek RBI groundout.

As Kristin Dems kept the Cougars off the board through three, JCU delivered one more run in the fourth. Once again, it was Odelli crossing home, again aided by a Cougar error.

But Misericordia started figuring things out, scoring two runs in the fourth before breaking through for a big 4-run frame in the fifth, firing ahead, 6-5. However, the eventual winning run did not cross til the sixth. While Casey Cash stopped the damage, entering after an inning-opening walk, the two-run margin would be enough.

JCU still fought in the seventh. After hitting a double to begin the stanza, Coode came around to score on an Isa Crespo sacrifice fly. But the Blue Streaks stranded the tying run aboard despite a strong comeback attempt.

Odelli, McPeek, and Coode led the offensive efforts with multi-hit games, combining for six of JCU's nine hits.

Next Up
John Carroll will return home and rest up for next weekend. The Blue Streaks will play four games at the Transylvania Tournament from March 14-15 in Kentucky.
