JCU Baseball Concludes Florida Trip by Splitting with Calvin

The Blue Streaks come back home with a 7-3 record

SANFORD, Fla. – The John Carroll Blue Streaks managed to cap off their incredible week in the Sunshine State by splitting a series against the Calvin Knights, which included an electric comeback victory in game one, 8-7.

John Carroll dropped the second game, 10-4. But JCU Baseball still returns home with a great 7-3 overall record.

Game 1
An incredible four-run fifth inning effort helped the Blue Streaks complete the comeback against Calvin in game one.

The dynamic duo from Chicago completely dominated at the plate, as junior Ethan Glossa went 3-for-3 at the plate with 4 RBIs, 2 stolen bases, and a double. Senior Jack Harmon, on the other hand, finished the first contest 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

After Calvin took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, John Carroll fought back an inning later and scraped together three runs, thanks to Glossa and Harmon. Sophomore George Haracz and senior Michael Persichetti got the ball rolling for the Blue Streaks after drawing two straight walks. And with two outs, Glossa hit a 2-run single to put JCU on the board.

John Carroll continued to find more two-out magic after a few errors from the Knights. Harmon would extend the lead to three after grabbing an RBI single. However, Calvin would respond with a 6-run inning in the fourth, giving them a 7-4 lead.

With their backs against the wall, JCU managed to step up yet again. Haracz, Persichetti and Connor Mayle kicked off the fifth inning with a single and two walks. And after a wild pitch that allowed for Haracz to score, Glossa nailed a 2-run double to tie the ballgame at seven. It didn't take long for the Blue Streaks to push across the winning run, as Harmon came through with a sacrifice to score Glossa.

In the end, it was the combination of solid defense and tough pitching that put game one on ice. Sophomore Kiayuan Baskerville and senior Austin Miller took the mound for the final three and a third innings of the matchup and did not allow a single run. Haracz also contributed to the clean play in the seventh inning when he made a backhanded sliding play up the middle to get the first out of the last inning.

Baskerville, in his two and a third innings of work, picked up three strikeouts and the win, while Miller pitched a clean inning to receive the save.

"We had a slow start to the day," said Glossa when asked about the ups and downs in game one. "They scored early in the game, and we were kind of struggling a bit. But we got something going and we went up 4-1. And even though they punched us in the face and scored six runs, we kept our heads up and didn't let it phase us."

Game 2
Despite the team's incredible comeback win in game one, the Blue Streaks were unable to take both, as they dropped game two.

Dylan Sowers held a hot bat with a home run in the fifth inning, while sophomore Thomas Bates also went 1-for-2 at the dish with two walks.

Calvin's explosive offense benefited from a 6-hit, 6-run performance in the third inning, which gave the Knights a controlling 8-0 lead. They would go on to pick up two more runs and finish with a total of 11 hits in the final contest.

There was, however, a slight jolt of offensive production from the Blue Streaks in the bottom of the seventh. JCU had a little two-out magic left in the tank, as Persichetti, Mayle, and Glossa reached base via an error and two walks. Senior Carson Balfour took one for the team after being hit by a pitch, which brought home Persichetti. Both Harmon and Bates followed it up with reaching on an error and a walk, but the Knights would ultimately hold John Carroll to just three runs in the last inning.

Overall, John Carroll Baseball finished their outstanding week with a 7-3 record. In the 10-game span, JCU outscored their opponents 81-51.
