Softball Surpasses Halfway Mark of OAC Play, Splitting with Capital

The split ends a very busy week for JCU Softball

COLUMBUS – A wild stretch of 12 scheduled games in 8 days concluded for John Carroll Softball on Sunday.

The Blue Streaks won one and lost on Sunday, finishing the busy slate with a 4-6 record.

John Carroll has now made it past the halfway mark of Ohio Athletic Conference play, possessing a 2-7 league record.

Game 1
The visitors threatened with a pair of runners in scoring position in the first before breaking through in the second. Alyssa McPeek started the inning with a single, then later came around to score courtesy of a passed ball. JCU added another run courtesy of a Capital error in the fourth.

Danielle Orendi cruised in the circle, not allowing a baserunner until the fourth. The Comets broke through via an unearned run, halving the lead. While the JCU bats struggled, Capital notched the tying run in the sixth, with a 2-out RBI double doing the trick. But Orendi stranded the runner at third to keep it even.

Both teams got a runner in scoring position in the seventh (Izzy Coode clipped a 2-out double for JCU), but neither team broke through, forcing extras. In the top of the eighth, Elaina Rodriguez played the hero.

The Avon native smacked a 1-out double to left center, and soon scored on a RBI grounder by Melissa Smith. Capital tried to respond, but Orendi slammed the door shut.

Orendi finished with a nice stat line: 8 innings, 6 hits, 1 earned run, 4 strikeouts. It was a brilliant effort to guide JCU to victory. At the dish, 6 Blue Streaks combined for 9 hits.

Game 2
Capital fired out of the gates and never truly looked back in the second contest.

The Comets blasted 5 runs in the first frame to take full control. Errors were critical, as three of the five tallies were unearned.

Despite the early deficit, though, JCU did not quit. Casey Cash came out of the bullpen and pitched quite well, scattering four hits in five and third innings of relief.

JCU crossed three runs in the third to make things interesting. Abby Farber and Emily Graves drew walks to start the inning. Kendall Trunzo scored both on a double to left center, and then Smith scored Trunzo on a double to left.

But that would be it for the JCU offense, as the visitors only got one runner in scoring position the rest of the day.

Next Up
John Carroll will get two days off at last. JCU returns to the diamond on Tuesday for a roadtrip to Mount Union.
