JCU started strong on Monday, but couldn't keep pace amidst Tuesday's gales

SEWICKLEY, Penn. – You have to be tough to play a spring sport.

As John Carroll Men's Golf proved on Monday and Tuesday, it can take a special kind of fortitude. On the second day in particular, in near gale-force winds, the Blue Streaks toughed it out at the Win Palmer Cup.

The Blue Streaks compiled a fifth-place result at the event, with a final team tally of 294-319-613.

After the first day, John Carroll stood within striking distance of Wittenburg. Seven strokes back of the eventual champs, the Blue Streaks appeared to be in position to make it interesting, but the wind proved to be too much. Strong winds with gusts from 40-50 miles per hour haunted the golfers. Plus showers with hail made it a tough go.

Allegheny Country Club was a nice course to play, though. The Par 70 course, established in 1895 and a founding member Western Pennsylvania Golf Association, is within a 45-minute drive from the hometowns of Daniel Donahue (Pittsburgh) and Austin Malley (Venetia). Wade Boyle also grew up in Greensburg, a little over an hour away.

As could be expected, one of the local guys, Austin Malley, guided the way with a consistent effort. The Peters Township grad remained steady with a 74-75-149. One of his top feats was a birdie on No. 10, the lengthiest of the course at a 606-yard Par 5, in the second round (one of his three birdies on Tuesday). His stout finish cemented a seventh-place tie.

Michael Keefe and Carson Meyer turned in just identical scores of 77-77-154 for John Carroll. Keefe experienced a love-hate relationship with the course's Par 4 holes, notching five birdies but also a handful of double bogeys on these challenging holes. Meyer achieved par on his first eight holes on Tuesday and birdied No. 10, but ran out of gas down the stretch.

Kamden Mowry led the charge for JCU on the opening day, firing up a 72 (+2). His day was finished off by a nice birdie putt on the 18th hole. Unfortunately the wind got him on the second day, as he carded an 83 to drop to 155.

London Hoyser started hot, as well, penning a 73 on his scorecard for round one. Two birdies on the back nine helped his cause. But in the second stanza, the sophomore tumbled with an 84.

Wade Boyle (75-85-160) and Daniel Donahue (81-85-166) could not take advantage of the Pittsburgh advantage, rounding things out for the Blue Streaks.
