JCU Sports Information garners distinction for four articles written in 2024

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On the heels of a great season covering a trophy-filled year for the Blue Streaks, John Carroll Sports Information is set to accept some hardware of its own.

Four articles written for JCUSports.com in 2024 have received distinction from the College Sports Communicators.

As part of the CSC Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, two articles have been selected as District winners, while two other articles have been named District Runner-up. All four were written by Sports Information Director Joe Ginley '16.

District winners advance to the national ballot, with national winners in each of the seven categories to be announced later this month. The contest was split into University and College divisions, allowing the recognition of the work done by members from smaller offices and those who work on NCAA Division I staffs.

The first District winner for John Carroll was in the Social Justice/Diversity category. A Black History Month Feature, the piece featured Bill and Larry Howland '51, a pair of brothers to play basketball for John Carroll. The brothers both played at nearby Central High School before World War II separated them. Bill enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served for two years, while Larry joined in the Navy in August 1943 and served for three years. The two reunited at John Carroll and enjoyed strong careers on the hardwood, with plenty of highlights along the way. Both Bill and Larry Howland graduated in 1951 from John Carroll with degrees in Business, Economics, and Government. The brothers were noted as strong students and well-respected members of the Carroll community.

The second District title was a co-winner in the Historical Feature category: "Remembering JCU's Gene Oberst 100 Years after His Paris Bronze". The feature follows Oberst from humble beginnings in Kentucky to football fame at Notre Dame playing under the legendary Knute Rockne to collegiate success as a javelin. A strong senior season in the javelin led to him earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team for the 1924 Olympics in Paris, where Oberst won bronze while rubbing elbows with future movers and shakers. After winning his medal, Oberst bounced around in athletics amidst the Great Depression, Oberst found a home in nascent University Heights in 1936 as a football coach at JCU. When World War II struck home, Oberst served the Navy V-12 program as athletic director. Oberst led the JCU's return to athletics after the war, then giving way to Herb Eisele and finding a home in the classroom. Oberst became a beloved professor, celebrating 35 years at JCU before retiring to pursue his passion in art.
