VICTOR, N.Y. – The John Carroll men's golf team had a strong showing on the first day of the NCAA Championship finishing at +6 and currently tied for 2nd out of 43 teams.
Teeing off at the Cobbleston Creek Country Club, Austin Malley shot even par and is currently T-10th out of 225 golfers. Malley was two over through the first five holes before coming alive for the final four holes of the front nine.
The Venetia, PA native had his best hole by recording an eagle on the par five, sixth hole to get back to even par. Malley would birdie the 8th and 9th holes to finish the the second nine at 34 and two-under par.
Michael Keefe started off slow with a double bogey on the 11th hole and a bogey on 12, as John Carroll teed off on the 10th hole. Keefe recorded another bogey on 16 before turning it on, as the Junior would birdie holes 17,18, and 1 consecutively to be +1.
Keefe finished the final five holes with three birdies and two pars to finish even par for the day and tied with Malley in 10th place.
Daniel Donahue had an impressive birdie on the par three 12th hole and shortly after he would birdie hole 14 and be -1. After back-to-back sixes, Donahue would be +2 after the first nine holes. Donahue fired even par on the back nine to finish +2 for the round and currently sits at T-32.
Rounding out the top four scores for JCU would be London Hoyser shooting +4. Throughout the 18 holes Hoyser recorded three birdies.
JCU found major success on the sixth hole as Malley, Keefe, Donahue, and Hoyser combined to shoot -5 on the hole, the best score by any team.
The Blue Streaks will be back in action tomorrow at the Midvale GCC with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. due to possible rain conditions delaying play.
