Defense and Strong Paint Play Key Kenyon Win for Women's Basketball

The Blue Streaks rolled to a road win for the second Saturday in a row

GAMBIER, Ohio – Two Saturdays, two North Coast Athletic Conference wins for John Carroll Women's Basketball.

In a second straight Saturday conference road game, the Blue Streaks dominated from start to finish to improve to 12-1 overall, 2-1 in league play.

Strong play in the paint and great defense ensured a decisive 80-44 victory at Kenyon College inside the Neal Fieldhouse.

Graci Semptimphelter and Carmen Heuker nailed early 3-pointers to set John Carroll ahead early. And importantly, the early success from behind the arc created chances in the painted area for JCU. Nicci Finazzo exploited the openings several times, and Heuker closed out the quarter with a traditional three-point play. JCU took a 22-8 lead into the second quarter.

The dominance for the visitors continued into the second quarter. John Carroll kept finding openings in the Kenyon defenses, with good backdoor cuts and driving layups. JCU also drew fouls at a good pace. Ten of JCU's first-half points came from makes at the charity stripe.

Heading into the break, JCU possessed a 41-16 lead, indicative of the excellent play at both ends of the court, most especially on defense.

A handful of triples by Kenyon in the third quarter helped to trim the deficit by five, but nowhere near enough to make it a ballgame.

John Carroll continued to slash to the basket with ease down the stretch in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Owls, 26-10. Ava Ryncarz operated with ease to start the fourth, allowing JCU to play everyone at the end. A Hannah Ward triple and a Reese Rhodehamel jumper highlighted the late action.

Heuker and Semptimphelter both finished with 14 points to top the team. Carly Perusek (12), Finazzo (12) and Ryncarz (11) also hit double digits in points.

JCU finished with an impressive 40 points in the paint and 24 points off turnovers.
