Men's Basketball Topples Little Giants in Important NCAC Road Victory

Luke Chicone and the Blue Streaks defeated the previously first-place Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- After a rough loss at home in December to Wabash College, the Blue Streaks traveled into a hostile environment to once again battle the first-place Little Giants.

A hard-fought, gritty battle ended with John Carroll getting on the bus happy after an 86-74 victory.

With the win, JCU advances to 6-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, tied with Wabash for second place (Denison was idle today, remaining in first place at 6-2).

Wabash jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead but about a minute later, a Kyle Iwrin three gave the Blue Streaks their first lead of the game. A converted and-one opportunity by Luke Chicone and a layup from Kasey Hunt had JCU up by three heading into the first media timeout.

Wabash moved swiftly to take a 3-point lead before a Brandon Rose triple tied the game back up. The Little Giants responded with a three of their own to get the lead right back. The made shot got the Wabash player excited, a little too excited. He was rung up with a technical foul, awarding the Blue Streaks two foul shots and possession. John Carroll capitalized on the opportunity as Hunt converted on one of the foul shots and Aidan Fitzgerald knocked down a three on the ensuing possession for a 1-point lead. The teams continued to battle as a layup ensured a slight Wabash lead into the under eight media timeout.

Mike Lamirand took the lead right back and a stepback three from Chicone pushed the Blue Streak advantage right back to four. Wabash would not go away, as the Little Giants rallied to take a three point lead. That would not last long, as the Saint Ignatius duo of Lamirand and Jack Zapolnik responded with back-to-back triples to retake the lead, one that the Blue Streaks would not surrender.

The remainder of the half was all Blue Streaks, as Chicone closed it off with another step back three to take a 7-point lead into the halfway break.

The start of the second half showed that the momentum was controlled by the visiting team. Fitzgerald knocked down another three, Chicone went into the paint with an acrobatic finish, and Sean Collins converted an and-one opportunity. John Carroll enjoyed a 15-point lead not even three minutes into the young half.

The Little Giants made a quick attempt to shrink the lead but another three, this time from Hunt, halted that run before it really got started. Another pair of free throws from Collins pushed the lead up to a game-high 16 points. The teams traded scores with Wabash showing flashes of a possible comeback until Luke Chicone jumped in the passing lane for a steal and drew a transition take foul, earning himself a trip to the line, where he knocked down both free throws. An impressive layup from Zapolnik and another score down low from Fitzgerald had the Blue Streaks holding onto a 19-point lead with eight minutes to go.

Wabash did everything in their power to try and get back into it but were unable to get any closer than 11, as the Blue Streaks closed out an amazingly impressive conquest of the NCAC's first-place team.

Leading the way for the Blue Streaks was Luke Chicone, with a very impressive 32-point, 4-rebound, 9-assist day, while also adding on a steal and taking two charges.

Kasey Hunt followed up with 13 points of his own. Sean Collins had an impactful performance with a near double-double on 9 points and 9 rebounds.
