Strong First Half Helps JCU Top DePauw

Greencastle, IN - The Blue Streaks started the new year with a heavy weight bout. Today's game featured the two highest scoring teams in the NCAC in the Blue Streaks and the Tigers of DePauw. It was also a matchup of the NCAC's top two individual scorers in John Carroll's Luke Chicone (23.8 ppg) and DePauw's Reph Stevenson (17.9 ppg). The Blue Streaks would survive a late come back attempt as they pulled out the 93-83 victory on the road.

"Energy and effort was off the chart today, from the guys on the court to those at the end of the bench. Very proud of us today." said senior Kasey Hunt talking about what it took to get a win on the road today.

Today's win was just a bit more special as well, given that it is Blue Streaks head coach Pete Moran's 150th career victory, making him just the 2nd coach in program history to reach the mark, trailing only his father Mike Moran.

"He's a great coach, a huge reason why playing basketball at John Carroll is so much fun. I think every guy in the locker room feels honored that we get to share this moment with him." is what team captain Sean Collins had to say about his coach's career milestone.

The Tigers took an early 6-2 lead, which would be their largest and only lead of the day. Back to back and one opportunities from Chicone and Kasey Hunt followed up by each of the two knocking down a shot from deep would put the Blue Streaks up for good not even 4 minutes into the game.

Chicone continued to waste 0 time when it came to scoring as he finished through contact for his 10th point of the game not even 5 minutes into today's contest. Just as everyone had expected, scoring was coming early and was coming in bunches. John Carroll was able to push the lead to 7 but great shooting from the Tigers prevented the doors from being blown off too early.

With the lead being just two it was time for Chicone to do what he does best, make game changing plays. After drilling his second three of the game he immediately followed it up with a steal on defense which he took all the way to the rim. A step back jumper from Hunt gave the Blue Streaks a 9 point lead, their largest of the day so far.

With the lead still at 9 and just under 7 minutes remaining in the opening half sophomore Tyree Turner made a series of plays that gave the Blue Streaks a burst of energy. After fighting for an offensive rebound on his first possession Turner immediately put it back up for the double digit lead. After causing a missed shot on the other end he spotted up in the corner and nailed a three as the visitors suddenly had a 14 point lead.

The teams continued to battle for the remainder of the half as John Carroll went into the break with a 16 point lead guided by Chicone and Hunt who had 16 and 13 points respectively in the opening half.

A rebound and coast to coast dunk for DePauw seemed to give a bolt of energy to the hosts to open half #2, but it was not long lived as not even 10 seconds later Hunt drilled his second three of the game to give the momentum right back to the Streaks. A few possessions later an offensive rebound and put back from Kyle Irwin pushed the lead to 20. 3 minutes later another layup from Chicone gave the Blue Streaks their largest lead of the game, a 26 point advantage.

From there, it was the Tigers that took over. DePauw slowly started getting back into the game as an impressive layup paired with a free throw had the hosts back within 20. An Aidan Fitzgerald three pushed the lead back up to 23 with under 10 minutes remaining, however it still wasn't enough to knock out DePauw. The Tigers went on a 16-2 run over the next 4 ½ minutes to pull back within single digits.

A turn around jumper cut the Blue Streak lead to just 6 with 3 minutes to go. Despite the late scare Jack Zapolnik finished through a foul call and was able to push the lead back to 9 as John Carroll sealed the deal and improved to 2-2 in NCAC play.

The Blue Streaks were guided by the elite duo of Luke Chicone (26 pts) and Kasey Hunt (24 pts, 5 steals).

"Teams have had Lebron and Kyrie, Shedeur and Hunter, McDavid and Draisaitl, Drake Maye and Treyveon Henderson. We have Chico and Kase. Every day those two put us in a great spot to win ball games." said sophomore Michael Condoleon while talking about the impact the two have on winning.

John Carroll managed to win the turnover battle for the 12th time this season as the Tigers had 20 turnovers to just the Blue Streaks 10.

It is also worth noting that every player that stepped on the court for John Carroll today scored.

"It was an all around effort today. The first guy to the last guy all did their part today. Proud of this group." stated Chicone when asked about the importance of having such good scoring depth.
