Blue Streaks Kick Off 2026 in Style With Comeback Victory Over DePauw

Greencastle, IN. - The John Carroll women's basketball team kicked off the new year in style, as the #11 team in the country downed the DePauw Tigers by a final of 83-78 Saturday afternoon.

Ava Ryncarz set the John Carroll women's basketball career record for made three-pointers, as the senior buried six in today's contest. Ryncarz passed Darlene Sheehan who held the previous record with 193 made triples from 1991-95. The senior currently has 199 made three's.

With the victory, JCU improves to 10-1 on the year and 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). The Blue and Gold were led by Ryncarz and Graci Semptimphelter, as the duo combined for 46 points and 10 three-pointers.

In the first quarter, the Blue Streaks were on fire from downtown by connecting on 5-of-11. Ryncarz started the game by drilling the opening three-pointer and tallied three triples in the stanza and ended the quarter with 11 points. The score was tied 17-17 after 10 minutes of action.

Despite the strong start from downtown, JCU would cool down in the second quarter. Early in the period, the Tigers would go on a 7-0 run and build a 24-19 edge.

The largest deficit of the half would be 10, but Kaylie McKenney connected on a tough layup to cut the lead to one-possession, as JCU would trail 31-28.

On the final possession of the first half, Brooke Laub buried a three from the right wing after great passing from every member of the Blue and Gold.

JCU trailed 38-34 heading into the break, as Ryncarz led the way with 14 points. As a team, the Blue Streaks drilled eight three-pointers, but the Tigers shot a blistering 61.5% from the floor.

With 3:55 remaining in the third quarter, Ryncarz picked up her third foul and was forced to the bench, as JCU trailed 53-44. Despite the senior taking a break, JCU ripped off seven-straight points to cut the deficit to two points.

The final quarter would be a battle, as Ryncarz started off the quarter drilling her fifth three of the day. Two possessions later Semptimphelter connected on a triple to tie the game at 62-62.

With 3:17 remaining, JCU re-gained the lead for the first time since leading 17-15 in the first quarter. Nicci Finazzo beat her defender off the dribble and found Ryncarz open for another three-pointer.

Carly Perusek had a great two-way game, as the Willoughby Hills native recorded a season-high six steals, tallied 12 points and iced the game with a pair of free-throws with 30 seconds remaining.

As a team, JCU buried 13 three-pointers and went a perfect 14-14 from the charity stripe. The 14-14 mark tied a program record of made free-throws at a 100% clip, tying the record from 1/27/16 when JCU did the same against Heidelberg.

Next up, JCU will travel to Pittsburgh, PA. for a battle against La Roche University, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. on January 7th.
