Women's Basketball Overcomes Cold Shooting to Best La Roche

The Blue Streaks have now won six straight

PITTSBURGH – The law of averages dictated that John Carroll Women's Basketball was due for an off game from 3-point range after a string of red-hot performances.

Despite shooting an ice-cold 9.1% from downtown, the Blue Streaks got the job done in a Wednesday night non-conference game at La Roche University in Pittsburgh.

With the 69-59 conquest, John Carroll advances to 11-1 on the season.

The visitors burst out to a 20-13 lead after the first quarter. Back-to-back buckets by Nicci Finazzo plus strong play by Carly Perusek pushed the visitors to a 16-4 lead by the 3:56 mark of the opening period. The Redhawks slimmed the deficit to single digits heading into the second.

Finazzo urged the lead forward to 11 points with 6:19 left in the second, with layups by Ava Ryncarz and Bella Houillion upping the lead to 15 points at the 3:39 mark. JCU stood ahead in full control at half, 37-25.

An and-one effort by Erin McCormick provided a great moment early in the third for the Clevelanders. But missed triples kept the Redhawks around, as the hosts trailed by 10 after three quarters.

Repeated chipping away by the Redhawks threatened the visitors in the fourth, as with 4:19 remaining, La Roche trailed by just one possession. Just 11 seconds after a Redhawks and-one that made it a 3-point game, Ava Ryncarz responded with a layup. A traditional 3-point play by Perusek followed by a steal-and-score by the Beaumont alum quickly got the lead back into double digits for a safe landing.

Perusek topped the Blue Streaks with 18 points plus 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Ryncarz (13) and Kaylie McKenney (11) both notched double digits in the points column. Both McKenney and Carmen Heuker tabbed 5 assists.
