Blue Streaks Earn First Conference Victory Against DePauw

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH. - The John Carroll volleyball team ended its three-game losing streak by defeating DePauw University 3-1 Saturday afternoon inside a rowdy Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. Before the match, JCU honored their alumni by thanking the past players for their contributions to the program and helping form the culture that is currently in place.

In the first set, John Carroll and DePauw traded points back and forth with the score tied at 8-8. The Blue and Gold would build some separation by scoring seven of the next eight points, which included kills by Kallan Hrics and a block.

The Tigers tried to claw back and cut the lead to 18-16. However, the front line trio of Natalie Glowe, Khloe Trivoli and Hrics recorded back-to-back blocks and ended the DePauw comeback. JCU would win the first set 25-20.

The second set would follow a different style, but the same result as JCU would win 25-18. John Carroll scored six-straight points early to build a 10-5 advantage. JCU and DePauw would trade points, later in the match, but Grace Jones sealed the deal towards the end of the set by recording a kill and was apart of two blocks.

In the third set, with their back against the wall DePauw would win a hard-fought battle 26-24. The Tigers were facing match point, but came through and scored the final three points to earn the set victory.

However, in the fourth and final set John Carroll jumped out to a commanding 13-3 lead and never lost control. Trivoli recorded four kills in that timeframe. Libero Olivia Mogyordy recorded a kill, as the junior returned a hard attack by the Tigers and the return went perfectly over the net and hit the DePauw side of the court. The Blue and Gold won the final set 25-13.

Mary Kate Sheehan was unstoppable, as the senior tallied a team-high 16 kills, as Glowe and Trivoli were right behind her with 11 each. Tess Murray and Laney Higgins contributed with a combined 46 assists.

With the victory, JCU improves to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Blue and Gold will travel ot Pittsburgh, PA and take on Carneige Mellon University on October 7th with a start time of 7 p.m.
