Berner Burns Tigers to Help Women's Soccer Clinch Spot in NCAC Tournament

The Blue Streaks will be the #4 seed in the tournament

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – A clutch road win has John Carroll Women's Soccer dancing again.

In a huge North Coast Athletic Conference road match, the Blue Streaks defeated DePauw, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. The win had major implications.

The victory clinches a spot in the NCAC Tournament, as JCU will be the #3 seed, heading to The College of Wooster on Wednesday.

A goal early in the second half proved to be enough in the close road victory over the Tigers. Avery Berner was the hero.

From the start, the Blue Streaks were the aggressor. JCU got a shot on goal in just the sixth minute, as Gracie Villwock broke the ice with the game's first shot on net. Villwock and the Blue Streaks kept on pressing.

JCU got a couple more chances before the 15-minute mark before the Tigers settled into the game. But DePauw didn't get any promising chances, as JCU still controlled possession without getting any shots on net.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Blue Streaks broke the scoreless tie.

Following a quick JCU buildup, Brooke Berkowitz got the ball at midfield and tapped a forward ahead to Avery Berner, ahead of defender. The first year from Dublin, Ohio raced up the right side, finding herself one on one with the keeper. The rookie beat the sliding DePauw keeper low left.

Berner's second goal of the season could not have occurred at a better time, as the huge goal broke the deadlock in a win-and-in game for JCU.

In the 63rd minute, DePauw tested Madison Skeese for the first time with a shot on goal.

The Tigers searched for the equalizer down the stretch, with a pair of shots on goal in the final 12 minutes. But Skeese and the defense turned away the chances to preserve the clean sheet.
