Women's Soccer Gets Great Result with Tie at Denison

The Blue Streaks posted one of the best performances of the season in the NCAC final rematch

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Having lost five in a row, John Carroll Women's Soccer faced a very tall test in Denison University on Tuesday evening.

In a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference tournament final, the Blue Streaks managed to eke out a draw in a great showing.

The Blue Streaks put together perhaps their best 90 minutes of the season to date in a 0-0 tie at Denison. While on paper, a draw might not look like much, this result is huge early in conference play for John Carroll. The implications are huge, considering that Denison entered the season as the preseason favorites to win the conference crown.

The Big Red dominated possession in the first half. Denison hemmed JCU into its own end for the most part as evidenced by the shot total: 13-0 Denison.

But the visitors fended off all of the challenges. Madison Skeese racked up 6 saves as the Blue Streaks showed grit in turning away opportunity after opportunity.

Chances continued for Denison in the early going of the second half. The Big Red controlled possession for the opening third of the half. But in the 61st minute, Brooke Berkowitz got a great chance on a quick JCU counterattack. The shot on goal seemed to change the dynamic of the game a bit.

While the Big Red continued to press, the chance seemed to break up some of the seeming invulnerability of the Big Red.

JCU got a corner kick with 10 minutes left, but an ensuing shot sailed high. A couple minutes later, a nice JCU buildup led to a surprise chance that nearly shocked the Denison keeper. The Blue Streaks got one more chance on a header off a corner with four minutes left, but the keeper leaped up to grab the floater.

Denison furiously tried to get the game winner as time ticked down. But the JCU defense held firm to finish off its best performance of the season.

The Big Red, no doubt a quality team, have competed well against ranked opponents this year. Denison finished with a wide margin in shots, 22-6, including 7-4 in shots on goal.

Madison Skeese finished with her third shutout of the campaign in between the pipes.
