In a Pair of Close Games, Softball Splits with Otterbein

Brynne Smith's 2-homer day spotlights a strong day for the Blue Streaks

WESTERVILLE – Close games have become a calling card for John Carroll Softball this season.

Getting close to the halfway mark of the campaign through 15 games, the Blue Streaks have played 13 contests decided by three or fewer runs. Both games at Otterbein University fell under that category.

John Carroll won the opener, 5-2, while the Cardinals snuck away with the second game, 5-4.

Game 1
The visitors struck first in the opening game. Elizabeth Hohlefelder opened the game with a walk, and three more walks did the trick for the first run, with Bella Carcioppolo getting credit for the RBI.

Emily Graves got the rock for the first game and pitched quite well. The Mayfield grad allowed a baserunner here and there, but didn't permit more than one Cardinal aboard until the sixth inning. Her excellence in the circle allowed the Blue Streaks to build the lead further.

Hohlefelder played the catalyst for JCU in the fifth inning, drawing a walk to start the frame and quickly stealing. An Izzy Coode single to left promptly scored her. Following a Jordan Anderson single through the left side, Brynne Smith doubled to left center for two critical runs.

The Cardinals at last got to Graves in the sixth, halving the deficit. But Anderson got out of the jam, garnering a groundout. JCU responded with another insurance run in the top of the seventh, courtesy of a homer to left by Smith, the first of her collegiate career.

Graves notched her third win on the year, while Anderson tallied her third save.

Game 2
Smith stayed red-hot in the second game, as the Eastlake native roared for a 2-run bomb in the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead.

A pair of Otterbein errors helped the JCU cause in the top of the third, as JCU scored a pair of unearned runs, though Coode and Smith both recorded RBIs.

The Cardinals hung up a crooked number on the board in the fourth inning, and broke through in the fifth inning. A double and a single to begin the inning got the first run home. A double down the rightfield line tied the game, and a single through the right side scored the eventual game-winning run.

John Carroll didn't get a runner in scoring position the rest of the way, as the Cardinals managed to sneak out in a 1-run game, marking JCU's third loss by a lone run this year.

Smith, Coode, Anderson, and Elaina Rodriguez all finished with 2-hit games. Kristin Dems accepted the loss in the circle with 4 earned runs allowed in 4.1 innings.

Next Up
John Carroll will be on the road again on Saturday, albeit remaining in Ohio, heading to Oberlin College for a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
