Softball Stumbles in Sweep to Geneva

The Blue Streaks lost twice on a beautiful day at Bracken Field

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a gorgeous Friday afternoon for softball at Bracken Field, John Carroll Softball lost a pair.

Against a strong Geneva College (PA) team that entered with a 22-6 record, the Blue Streaks opened with a close loss and then faltered.

John Carroll dropped both games by final scores of 2-1 and 13-4.

Game 1
The Golden Tornadoes started things off with a leadoff homer, as Molly Shelley blasted a shot over the wall in left. Emily Graves settled in from there.

John Carroll got runners to the corners with 2 outs in the following half-inning, but could not get it done. The Golden Tornadoes scored before JCU could respond, however, adding a key insurance run on an unearned run.

Brynne Smith tripled in the ensuing half-inning, but was stranded. In the top of the fifth, Jordan Anderson checked in for JCU in the circle. The veteran looked excellent in three innings of scoreless relief, striking out six Geneva hitters in an impressive outing.

The Blue Streaks nearly came back in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Jordan Bradford knocked a double to left center. Ashley Sykes brought her home with a bigtime RBI single. But the two-out rally ended there with a popout.

JCU limited Geneva to just 6 hits. Elizabeth Hohlefelder tabbed two of JCU's 5 hits.

Game 2
Just like in the opener, Shelley slammed a homer to begin the game. Geneva added two more runs before all was said and done in the first.

JCU provided a rapid response in the bottom of the first. Hohlfelder opened it up with a single, stealing second. Izzy Coode doubled off the top of the wall, not far off from a homer. Following a Coode steal, Anderson walked. A wild pitch then plated Coode, trimming the deficit to 3-2 after a fun first frame.

John Carroll fired ahead in the second. After Kristin Dems settled in, Sykes and Bella Carcioppolo got aboard with singles to begin the inning. After a Coode walk, a Geneva wild pitch and error allowed two runs to score for JCU. The Golden Tornadoes quickly made up for the error with a 5-run third.

JCU's bats fell silent for the next few innings, though the hosts threatened with two runners in scoring position in the fifth. In the meantime, Geneva put it away with more runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Next Up
