Fourth-Inning OWU Homer Proves the Difference in a Close NCAC Loss for JCU Baseball

Jake Corll and Michael Perry (pictured) limited the Battling Bishops to just 3 runs on 5 hits

DELAWARE – It is a whole new world for John Carroll Baseball in the North Coast Athletic Conference. For example in the NCAC, you can split your doubleheader when you're expecting weather.

John Carroll and Ohio Wesleyan agreed to just that, playing the first game of the series on Thursday with the second game still scheduled for Saturday. If weather does intervene, then it becomes easier to reschedule and helps preserve your pitching.

So, the Blue Streaks and Battling Bishops both trotted out their aces. While Jake Corll did well, OWU's Parker Tomlin did just a tad better in a 3-2 victory for the Battling Bishops.

The bats were slow to awaken from a Thursday afternoon slumber, with just two hits between the two teams in the first three innings.

The hosts broke through in the fourth inning with a two out rally. It began with a harmless single, and then a walk made it more treacherous. Third baseman Michael Malone made Corll pay dearly with a 3-run homer.

John Carroll broke up the no-hitter in the fifth with a Brett Krugman double down the line. A Michael Pollard bunt single set runners at the corners, but a 5-3 lineout doubleplay took the wind out of JCU's sails.

Corll gave way to Michael Perry in the sixth. The first year reliever looked outstanding, allowing just a walk and a couple baserunners via errors, but no hits.

The visitors broke through at last in the eighth. Jake Monaco walked with one out, leading OWU to turn to the bullpen. Following a George Haracz walk, an error allowed JCU's first run to score. Christopher Salek then doubled, slimming the margin to one run with 3 outs left to give. Eric Krowl did draw a hit by pitch, but OWU quickly struck down the rally.

JCU managed just 4 hits, but still had a chance thanks to just a 5-hit effort by OWU. In the end, one mistake was the ballgame, but it was still a strong day by the JCU pitching staff.
