Murlin's Marvelous Win Clinches First NCAC Triumph for Men's Tennis

Dylan Murlin won a third-set tiebreaker to secure the first-ever NCAC win for JCU Men's Tennis

CHAGRIN FALLS – After a close call last time out vs. The College of Wooster, John Carroll Men's Tennis gritted out a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Thursday.

Under the bubble in The Wembley Club in Chagrin Falls, the Blue Streaks fought tooth and nail to earn a massive win over Ohio Wesleyan University, marking the first NCAC win in program history.

In front of a tense crowd, Dylan Murlin provided the clinching conquest. The sophomore stood strong in a tiebreaker to decide the third set.

"We're competing great. Against Wooster, it came down to the wire, we lost 4-3, and it was down to a third set match at the end. Today, same thing, and Dylan stepped up today just like he did in Florida," said Torrey McNeal, in his first season as head coach. "The guy is just clutch. We're in these matches, we're competing really well. We just keep grinding away and working. It pays off, we just gotta keep at it."

Without a doubt, Murlin's marathon match at #5 singles stands as the top moment of the afternoon. The Hilliard native won his first set, 6-3, before his foe, Rainer Holl, fought back with an impressive comeback to take the second set, 7-5. In a lengthy third set, Murlin stood ahead, 5-4, looking to salt it away. But Holl roared ahead, 6-5, before Murlin regrouped to tie it.

From the start of the 7-point tiebreaker, Murlin looked locked in, smiling soon after grabbing the lead. A joyful Murlin easily won the tiebreaker, 7-2, shrugging before his teammates engulfed him in celebration.

John Carroll stood behind the 8-ball after losing narrowly in doubles. While Murlin and Cavan Boutillette won in a thriller, 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker), JCU lost the #1 singles bout in a 7-5 tiebreaker and dropped the #2 match.

Jean Davin wasted little time in dispatching his foe atop the singles lineup, looking strong in a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Phillip Gorun finished shortly after at #3 singles, 6-3, 6-0, winning 10 straight games.

Anthony Markello experienced a tough ending. After splitting the sets, 6-2 and 5-7, the senior lost the decider, 3-6. But Nathan Tam did well at #4 singles, placing JCU on the brink of victory with a cruising victory, 6-2, 6-1.

Following Boutillette's defeat at #6 singles, the onus was placed on Murlin, and the Finance major did not disappoint.
