Impressive Defensive Display Clinches OWU Win & NCAC Tourney Berth for Women's Lacrosse

The Blue Streaks held the Battling Bishops scoreless for 46 minutes

DELAWARE, Ohio – Following a rocky start, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse dominated Ohio Wesleyan University on the road on Tuesday evening.

The Blue Streaks trailed, 3-1, after 14 minutes of action. But in the next 46 minutes, the visitors impressively held the Battling Bishops scoreless.

And by virtue of a dominant 11-3 victory, John Carroll clinched a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Regardless of the results in the final game of the regular season, JCU will among the top four teams competing in the NCAC Tournament for the conference's automatic NCAA playoff berth. JCU currently sports a 4-2 mark in NCAC play.

OWU opened up strong in the first quarter, with JCU's only offensive highlight coming on a Kathleen Cagney free-position, woman-up goal with 6:48 on the clock.

But from there, it was all John Carroll.

Mea Musillo started the onslaught with a goal in transition, beating the defender with a nice dodge and a sidearm shot. Just under a minute later, Riley Knapp found a deep opening in the OWU defense and bounced in a beauty from Anna Vaccarelli to tie it.

Free-position goals by Abby Cassidy and Kathleen Cagney within a span of a minute late in the second quarter crucially pushed John Carroll ahead, 5-3. JCU's lead stuck into halftime.

The third quarter was a quiet one, as JCU's defense dug in. OWU got a few opportunities, but Josephine Lawler stood tall in net. Mary Grace Godleski broke through at the six-minute mark after a crosscrease from Vaccarelli to make it 6-3.

For the majority of the fourth quarter, OWU simply didn't have the ball. JCU forced turnovers and stifled OWU again and again. Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks found more of a rhythm on offense. For starters, Cassidy raced in for a great goal off a perfect Anna Spitzer pass right as JCU finished killing off a penalty.

The back-breaker followed shortly after. Knapp won the ensuing draw control, raced downfield, passed it to Spitzer on the wing, then ran right down broadway and fired Spitzer's passback into the net for an 8-3 lead.

For good measure, Musillo scored off a spin move with a lefty goal that beat the goalie stickside. A minute later, Musillo drew defenders away and then passed to a charging Cagney for a 10-3 advantage. Godleski finished off the scoring late with a free-position goal.

Cagney led the offense with a hat trick, while Knapp's statline of 2 goals, 5 groundballs, 3 draw controls, and 2 caused turnovers showcase just how crucial she was to the effort. On defense, Emily Van Gorder led the way with 4 caused turnovers. Josephine Lawler made 6 saves.

As a team, the Blue Streaks notched an impressive 19 caused turnovers. JCU limited OWU to just 19-of-29 on clears and won the groundball battle, 31-23.
