Men's Lacrosse Upended by Kenyon in NCAC Action

Devin Holder tied a career best with 18 saves, but JCU faltered in the second half

KENYON – In the three North Coast Athletic Conference losses this season for John Carroll Men's Lacrosse, the third quarter has been the culprit.

Following a close first half, the Kenyon College Owls pulled away on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks drop to 1-3 on the year in conference play with the 13-7 defeat.

The first half felt very much like the opening of the Denison game a week-and-a-half ago for John Carroll, as the Blue Streaks played a strong defensive game. Devin Holder looked strong in the opening 30 minutes, providing 10 saves.

John Carroll opened the scoring at the 10:57 mark of the contest, as Josh Lombardo hit a sidewinder shot off a cross-crease pass from Cameron Miller. Kenyon evened things up a couple minutes later, but the score remained deadlocked until the 4:27 mark when Braden Zarek hit a nice lefty shot low stickside for a goal. The Owls fired up three goals in the final four minutes for a 4-2 lead.

Just 66 seconds into the second quarter, John Carroll got on the board on the man-up. Miller fired home a righty ripper on a turnaround shot off a Zarek pass to trim the margin to 4-3. JCU got some solid looks the rest of the quarter, but could not convert.

Thankfully, the Owls failed to make hay, too. Kenyon only tabbed one tally in the second quarter, converting on a chance with 1:47 to play in the opening half.

Out of the break, the Owls tallied three goals in quick succession. And just like that, Kenyon stood ahead, 8-3, with 12:43 to play in the third. Casey LaForce stopped the run with a goal near the midway mark with a nice shot while getting pushed towards the crease.

But the Owls replied with a 4-goal run the rest of the third, heading into the final stanza ahead, 12-4.

LaForce scored off a Larry Voss pass to begin the fourth, and Zarek trimmed the deficit further with a nice goal low-left. Tyler Pirain also found twine with 6:03 to play. But the comeback attempt did not have enough juice.

Kenyon stood ahead clearly on faceoffs, winning 18-of-24. Both teams looked effective on clears, but Kenyon won the groundball battle, 39-21.

Devin Holder tied a career best with 18 saves in the game.
