Men's Soccer Settles for Tie in Physical Home Battle

Harley Forkins netted a goal in the second minute for the Blue Streaks

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A physical battle resulted in a draw on a rainy Wednesday evening at Don Shula Stadium. 

John Carroll Men's Soccer scored early in the match, but Penn State Behrend found the equalizer not long into the second half. 

So, in the third game of a 4-match homestand, the Blue Streaks settled for a 1-1 draw.

The Blue Streaks managed to get on the board very quickly thanks to some quick thinking. In the second minute, Ryan Cvitkovic beat a pair of Lions and managed to get a slight tap forward ahead to Harley Forkins. The sophomore fired the ball in, which the goalie stopped, but Forkins fought past and back-heeled it into the back of the net to shock Penn State Behrend. 

Physicality defined much of the first half, as the teams battled for every 50/50 ball and showcased great enthusiasm that looked like a league game more so than a mid-week non-conference affair.  

Forkins got a chance on a freekick in the 23rd minute but fired it right at the goalie. JCU got another free kick just outside the box after a Penn State Behrend yellow card in the 39th minute but nothing came of it. 

With three minutes left in the half, a Luka Pranjeta goal looked to be an insurance tally for a split second until the referee called him offsides. At half, JCU held a 5-3 advantage in shots. 

The Lions found the equalizer in the 58th minute. On a deep Lions throw-in, the ball floated through the JCU defense and to the foot of Penn State Behrend's Adam Thompson, who didn't miss the chance to make it a 1-1 game. 

The remainder of the match proved to be a physical duel with plenty of hard feelings throughout. The teams combined for seven yellow cards the rest of the way (four by Penn State Behrend). But in the end, the teams settled for a 1-1 draw.
