Volleyball Defeats Penn State Behrend in a Nice Road Win

JCU rolled past a solid Lions team just a night after beating Chatham at home

ERIE – Back-to-back midweek matches are rare. But no doubt, the strain of playing on consecutive nights, especially with a road game on the backend, can prepare you for the stress of the postseason. 

Against a solid Penn State Behrend team, the Blue Streaks passed the test.

John Carroll Volleyball beat the Lions, who entered with a 7-1 record, in straight sets – 25-23, 25-23, 25-12.

The Blue Streaks and Lions fought tooth and nail in the first set, with neither team getting the upperhand. Tied at 20-all, the Blue Streaks scored four straight, aided by a Tess Murray ace and a Hailey Williams kill. Grace Jones ended the set with a kill.

The second set elapsed similarly to the first, as the teams once again found themselves deadlocked at 20 apiece. Natalie Glowe then stepped to the forefront with a kill and ace to help seal the deal late.

The Lions ran out of gas in the third set, committing a number of errors. Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks locked in with a phenomenal .478 attack percentage. Kallan Hrics started the set with a pair of kills and the visitors never looked back, racing to a 14-3 lead to take full control. Hailey Williams kept up the pressure late, ensuring that the hosts didn't even sniff a comeback.

Glowe topped the team with 10 kills, and Williams' 9 kills and .444 attack percentage also stands out. Murray tabbed 23 assists and Olivia Mogyordy accumulated 19 digs. Mary Kate Sheehan had a hand in 5 of JCU's 8 blocks.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will be back on the road this weekend, the lone fall team to be away from home. JCU will head to Buffalo State for the Buffalo State Bengal Challenge.
