Men's Basketball Offense Stays Hot To Capture Scranton Radisson Invitational Title

The John Carroll men's basketball team stayed red hot on offense to defeat the host University of Scranton Royals, 96-77, in the championship game of the Radisson Invitational Sunday afternoon in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Today's game marked John Carroll's third in a row in which it exceeded 90 points and made at least ten three-point field goals.

John Carroll trailed just one time today when it fell behind 8-7 with 16:23 left in the opening period, but used a 19-5 run soon after to build its lead to double digits. Michael Hartnett (North Royalton, OH, Lakewood St. Edward) rained in a three-pointer with 11:08 showing on the first half clock to give JCU a 26-13 advantage.

Scranton was able to slice the lead down to five at 27-22 when Matt Swaback drained a three of his own with just over nine minutes to play, but the Blue Streaks hit the jets for the remainder of the half. John Carroll scored 16 of the final 19 points to take a 53-32 lead into the break.

John Carroll connected on 10 of its 13 three-point field goal attempts and 20 of its 34 field goal attempts  in the opening 20 minutes of play.

The Blue Streaks continued to extend their lead to as many as 32 points before settling upon the final 19-point margin.

John Carroll (3-0), which had 11 different players score at least two points, was paced by 19 points from Hartnett and Rudy Kirbus (Willoughby Hills, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius). Hartnett was 6-6 from the field -- all from three-point range -- to post his career-high.

The Blue Streaks were 15-24 (.625) from beyond the arc as a team.

Scranton (2-1) was led by 15 points from Zach Ashworth.

Matt Crozier (Philadelphia, PA, LaSalle College) was named the tournament MVP as he finished the two days with 38 points, 22 reboundds, six assists, three blocks and three steals. Tommy Lavelle (Westlake, OH, Westlake) also earned all-tournament with a solid tournament stat line of 18 points, 12 boards, eight assists, seven steals and two blocks.
