Essentially, it came down to a pair of games to decide matters between John Carroll and Mount Union in a women's tennis match Tuesday afternoon in Aliiance, Ohio.
Unfortunately for the visiting Blue Streaks, the two games went the Purple Raiders' way, and the host squad prevailed 5-4 in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual meet.
The singles matches were split right down the middle, with Mount Union claiming the top three matches while John Carroll captured the lower three. Meredith Skaggs won 6-3, 6-1 at #4, Ashley Bauer coasted to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #5, and Athena Pappis survived a 6-4, 6-4 tussle at #6.
In doubles play, with just three matches contested, Mount Union would take two. The Purple Raiders #1 tandem of Kacey Huff and Kristina Hallett defeated Maria Ciccolini and Meredith Skaggs, 8-5. John Carroll's #3 duo of Bauer and Deanna Bouchahine worked their way to an 8-4 win at #3.
The dividing line this time fell at #2, where Mount Union's Mary-Catherine Beck and Leslie Douglass outlasted the veteran Blue Streak pairing of Amy Marchlen and Anna Navatsyk, 8-6.
Mount union is now 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, while JCU slips to 5-8 and 1-2 in league action.
