Long Ball Leads To John Carroll Softball Sweep Of Wooster

Three home runs, including two grand slams, figured prominently in John Carroll's twinbill sweep of the College of Wooster in a non-conference affair Thursday at Bracken Field.

John Carroll scored ten runs in both contests, taking the first, 10-1, and second, 10-0.

JCU actually trailed in the opener after Wooster's Andrea Kelly had a solo home run in the top of the first inning. But it would be all Blue Streaks after that, starting with a four-run bottom ofthe first inning highlighted by a two RBI double by Deyna Fenelli.

After tacking on a single run in the second, JCU would score three more runs in the third, with the big hit a two-run single by Julie Marlowe.

JCU led 8-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, and needed just two more at bats to finish the game. After Olivia Matthews was hit by a pitch, Sam Thompson followed with a two-run home run that brought the contest to an end through the eight-run rule.

The Blue Streaks would get a shutout win in the nightcap, with Thompson and Lauren Beatty combining on a four-hitter.

As for the offense, JCU was keyed by two grand slams. The first came with one out and JCU leading 2-0 in the third. With one run already across and the bases still loaded, Michelle Murphy hit her first collegiate home run to up the lead to 6-0.

Erin Riccardi would supply the final hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth. After the first three batters reached safely, Riccardi would end the day with her second home run of the season and her first grand slam.

With the two wins, John Carroll improves to 19-7 on the year.
