Uneven Effort Sinks JCU Volleyball In Tussle With Wooster

Laura Sudo (#15) had a career-high eight kills in John Carroll's match against Wooster

The John Carroll volleyball team struggled with multiple personalities Wednesday evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center against the College of Wooster, falling in four unevenly played games.

Box Score

The Fighting Scots won the match, 25-22, 20-25, 25-11, 25-20, with each game playing out in a unique way.

Game one was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight ties, the last of which occured at 21-21. From there, Wooster would win four of the final five points.

The second game was also closely contested, but this time it would be the Blue Streaks that finished strong. After leading most of the way, JCU was ahead by just one point at 20-19. The Blue Streaks were able to even the match, however, thanks to late kills by Meredith McDiarmid and Laura Isbell.

Compared to the close tussles of the first two games, the third game was an abberation. Wooster scored seven of the first eight points and never looked back in a 25-11 rout. JCU has just seven kills against seven errors in the frame.

The Blue Streaks looked determined to make the match go the distance by racing out to a 13-8 lead. But the Fighting Scots went on a 9-0 run and never again relinquished the lead and closed John Carroll out in four.

MaryEileen Dalton had a team high 12 kills while Jessica Hammer had 23 digs for John Carroll, which fell to 7-5 on the year.

Wooster, which was paced by 16 kills from Erin Webster and nine blocks from kateLynn Riley, improved to 8-2 and won its fifth straight.
