Tense And Low Scoring Are Operative Words For JCU's Softball Split With Baldwin-Wallace

Michelle Murphy (#22) watches as a hit by Mackenzie Griffin gets through the left side of the infield

With just eight runs combined over 14 innings, it is safe to say crossing the plate was a rare occurence in two tense affairs Saturday at Bracken Field between a pair league and Cleveland area softball rivals.

Baldwin-Wallace prevailed in the opener by a 2-1 score before John Carroll exacted revenge with a 3-2 win in the nightcap to split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader between two teams playing with postseason ramifications already a hot topic.

Box Scores:  Game One  /  Game Two

Playing in games like these against each other is nothing new for both of these programs. Last year, JCU needed a rally in the seventh to win the first game of the doubleheader, and was fortunate to earn the sweep after scoring three runs in the first inning and holding on for dear life.

The Blue Streaks took the first lead of the game in the first inning of game one when leadoff hitter Michelle Murphy (Erie, PA, Villa Maria Academy) singled, and then went station-to-station before crossing home plate on an RBI groundout by Olivia Mathews.

The Yellow Jackets used the same recipe in the third inning when their leadoff hitter Mallory Kobak singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a single by Tanya Davis.

The visiting team got their next, and final, run when Katrina Resek homered in the sixth inning. That would end the scoring for both squads, and allow the Yellow Jackets to take game one.

In the second game, both teams swapped two runs in the second inning. It would stay that way until the fourth when JCU went ahead for good.

Using the recipe that seemed to work well in the first game, Angela Vistocco (Victor, NY, Victor) led off the inning with a walk. Senior Laura Boselovic (Wexford, PA, North Allegheny)'s single advanced Vistocco to send base. The pair then each moved up a station on a double steal, putting runners at second and third with just one out.

Junior Jamie Colley (Houston, TX, St. Agnes Academy) put the ball in play, and an error by the B-W third baseman allowed Vistocco to score the go ahead run. The Blue Streaks couldn't push any more across, but it proved to be all they needed as senior Sam Thompson (Cheektowaga, NY, Maryvale) was fantastic in the circle.

She held the Yellow Jackets in check over the last three innings, allowing just two runners to get on base. She induced a pop-out by Kobak with the tying run on first base to get the 21st and final out of the ballgame to secure the victory.

The Blue Streaks are now .500 all around - 12-12 overall and 3-3 in OAC play. They'll look to overload the win column on Wednesday when they travel to New Concord to take on Muskingum in a doubleheader.
