John Carroll Softball Teams Up to Beat Breast Cancer

The John Carroll University softball team is sponsoring a "Teaming Up to Beat Breast Cancer" event for a Susan G. Komen fundraiser on Wednesday, April 28, centered around the Blue Streaks' doubleheader against Heidelberg University.

In a spirit of true sportsmanship and compassion, the idea is actually a joint venture between the softball coaches from the two schools.

"Betsy (Hada) and I were talking about how other sports had events to raise awareness about cancer, so out of that discussion, they had a fundraising event last year at Heidelberg and now we are doing it here at John Carroll," said Blue Streaks head coach Erin Brooks.

For assistant coach Kim Tackett, it is not just a good cause but a personal one.

"My college coach, Donna Newberry at Muskingum, is going through her third round with cancer," said Tackett. "We saw her last week and while I was happy for our girls to win, at the same time, I can't help but feel for her and what she is going through."

The first pitch will be thrown at 3:30 p.m. at Bracken Field. A celebration will follow following game two at the Blue Gold Club Tent.

Each of the seniors will also be recognized at the annual Senior Day, including Julie Marlowe (Harmony, PA, Seneca Valley) , Laura Boselovic (Wexford, PA, North Allegheny) and Sam Thompson (Cheektowaga, NY, Maryvale).

Fans can donate a minimum of one dollar for every hit, a minimum of one dollar for every strikeout or you can donate a minimum of one dollar for hits and strikeouts combined. General donations are also accepted, and will be well beyond the April 28 date.
