JCU Volleyball Starts Fast Toward Sweep Of Ohio Wesleyan

Laura Sudo's three kills in game one contributed largely to John Carroll's fast start at Ohio Wesleyan

The John Carroll volleyball team attempted to apply the "shortest distance between two points is a straight line" theory in its match Wednesday night against Ohio Wesleyan.

In this case, the two points were zero and 25, and the Blue Streaks tried to get there in fast fashion. While not a perfectly straight line, John Carroll made quick work of the host Battling Bishops, 25-11, 25-20, 25-17, in a non-conference match in Delaware, Ohio.

Box Score

With three kills by Laura Sudo leading the way, JCU scored ten of the last 11 points of the first game to cruise to a 14-point win.

The second set looked to be going down a similar path. When Kerry Fox slammed a kill on the 23rd point, it gave the Blue Streaks an 18-5 advantage.

John Carroll suddenly lost its edge, however, allowing the Battling Bishops back into the game. Six attack errors combined with a rejuvenated Ohio Wesleyan offense closed JCU's lead down to 21-17.

The Blue Streaks were able to hang on with Sudo and Meredith McDiarmid winning key points down the stretch for a 25-20 win.

McDiarmid started with the serve in game three, and helped John Carroll build a 5-0 lead thanks to apair of aces. The Streaks never looked back in completing the sweep with an eight-point victory.

Fox paced John Carroll with nine kills, while McDiarmid generated the attack with 30 assists and contributed five aces. Charlotte Sykora had a terrific night at the net with eight blocks, three of which were solo.

John Carroll is now 8-4 on the year.
