Balanced Attack Nets JCU Volleyball A Victory In Conference Opener

Teresa Noewer had 25 kills in three matches over the weekend in Marieta
The scoresheet will say John Carrol went 1-2 this weekend, but that one win truly was the one the Blue Streaks were seeking most.

On Friday night, JCU faced host Marietta College in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams, and came away as 21-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 winners.

Box Scores:  vs. Marietta  /  vs. Thiel  /  vs. Washington & Lee

The Blue Streaks had six players with at least five kills, led by 13 from Kerry Fox and 11 from Teresa Noewer. Meredith McDiarmid added 37 assists and Sarah Slagle led all players with 21 digs.

After struggling in the opening game, JCU turned things around in game two. The Streaks were able to break away from an 11-11 tie thanks to a key stretch in which Fox tallied three of her 13 kills.

In the final two games, John Carroll committed a combined five errors in its attack while blasting 26 kills.

As strong as JCU was Friday, they wereequally inconsistent on Saturday. The Streaks managed just 33 kills while taking on 28 errors in a 20-25, 25-18, 8-25, 19-25 loss to Thiel College. The third game represented John Carroll's largest setback in a single frame this year.

Melanie Rodriguez had a team-high 22 digs against the Tomcats.

John Carroll played much better against powerful Washington & Lee in its second match Saturday. Facing a 10-1 Generals squad, the Blue Streaks fought hard but fell by a 22-25, 19-25, 25-15, 22-25 count.

Fox and Noewer had 19 of JCU's 45 kills in the match, while McDiarmid had 43 assists and four aces.

At the end of the weekend, John Carroll would run its record to 13-6 ... and most importantly, 1-0 in the OAC.
