Bizarre Ending Leads To First Home Loss For JCU Wrestling Against Crosstown Rivals

JCU freshman Ken Locsei recorded the lone pin by either team in the 149-pound bout
For the lucky few who braved the snow-covered streets of Northeast Ohio Tuesday, they witnessed history at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Even then, they may not have been quite sure what they saw.

The end result was a 21-18 victory by Baldcwin-Wallace over John Carroll that marked the Yellow Jackets' first victory in series history on the home mat of the Blue Streaks.

How it was achieved may be go down in the record books as the most anticlimactic ending in sports history.

JCU got off to a roaring start, winning four of the first five matches to build an 18-3 lead. John Cobos (Avon Lake, OH, Lakewood St. Edward) (125) and Greg Ryan (Warren, OH, Howland) (141) scored victories on decisions, while Ken Locsei (Willoughby, OH, South) recorded a first period win in his 149-pound bout.

When Connor Suba (Middleburg Heights, OH, St. Edward) accepted his forfeit at 157, the Streaks were closing in on their 30th victory in 32 tries against Baldwin-Wallace.

The tide began to turn, however, with close wins by Corey leonhard at 165 and Andrew Scavuzzo at 174.

The big surprise of the evening was Joe Georgian upsetting Bryan Steinmetz (Port Washington, WI, Port Washington) at 184. The JCU leader in wins held a 3-1 lead early int he second, but eventually lost by a 6-4 count.

After Tristan Stoll held on for a 5-3 win at 197 pounds to pull the Yellow Jackets to within 18-15, the final outcome would be decided by the final match at 285 pounds.

The match never happened.

A technical error was cited by the Baldwin-Wallace coaching staff just prior to the start of the match, noting that the wrong wrestler was listed on the weigh in sheet. By rule, the Blue Streaks forfeitted the match and six points to Baldwin-Wallace. Ryan Jones accepted the win and the Yellow Jackets rolled out of the gym with a three-point victory.

Even the crowd seemed stunned by the turn of events, as a smattering of applause was all that greeted the announcement of the final score.

Baldwin-Wallace moves to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the OAC with the win, while JCU slips to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in league action.
