Kaylin Akerly (#4) was the only player on the field to score in a 1-0 John Carroll victory over Mount Union
Box Score Playing on the same day against the same opponent as exactly one year ago today, the John Carroll Blue Streaks experienced déjà vu Wednesday afternoon at Shula Stadium. So much though that the Blue Streaks even won by the same score.
Despite the gloomy weather that descended upon University Heights, JCU used a first half goal and a relentless attack to overtake the Mount Union Purple Raiders by a 1-0 count.
Box Score
The Purple Raiders came into the game as the top scoring team in the Ohio Athletic Conference, but John Carroll left with the satisfaction of shutting them out. This well-earned victory adds to their streak of seven consecutive wins at home as well as their third straight shutout.
To put it in laymen's terms, John Carroll is going for the gold this year.
The lone goal of the game was scored by JCU freshman forward
Kay Akerly, who smashed the ball from about the 30 yards out. Akerly now has four goals in her rookie season.
“It felt good to go into the half with a 1-0 lead,” said Akerly of her goal. “The ball was hard to deal with because it was so slippery and the weather did not make it any better.”
The Blue Streaks, who outshot the Raiders by 40-6 margin, repeatedly tested the Purple Raiders' freshman goalkeeper, Maria Favorite, who came through for her team with 14 saves. She stopped everything except for Akerly's golden goal in the 23rd minute.
John Carroll continues adding tallies to the winning side with their conference record of 3-1-0 (tied for second place) and 9-5-0 overall. Mount Union finishes the day with 1-3-0 record in the OAC and overall mark of 6-6-1.
