John Carroll Closes Door On Regular Season Home Schedule With Confidence-Building Win

Box Score In what was the final home game of the 2011 regular season for the John Carroll University women's soccer team, the Blue Streaks didn't disappoint the home crowd as they rebounded from their only loss of the year so far at Shula Stadium with an impressive 2-0 win over the visiting Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets.

After suffering a narrow 2-1 home loss at the hands of league-leading Ohio Northern University on Friday night, the Blue Streaks needed to rebuild their confidence ina match up with an Ohio Athletic Conference and crosstown rival.

Despite playing in less than ideal weather conditions, the Blue Streaks came out of the gates firing in an attempt to get back on the winning track in their second to last game of the 2011 regular season.

JCU wasted no time imposing their will on the Yellow Jackets, who began the afternoon in fifth place in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings coming into the match. The Blue Streaks, who were in fourth place in the OAC standings at the start of the day, used an early goal from freshman Kaylin Akerly in the 16th minute to take the early 1-0 lead over Baldwin-Wallace. Sophomore Kayla Acklin assisted Akerly on the goal.

Only minutes later, Akerly struck again with the assist coming from junior Kristen Profeta as she snuck another goal past the Yellow Jackets goalkeeper, giving the Blue Streaks a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The goal was Akerly's second goal of the day and her seventh on the season.

Coming out of halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead, the Blue Streaks didn't become complacent as they continued to stick to their game plan of dominating ball possession. Despite each team having their fair share of offensive chances in the second half of action, neither team could net a goal.

That was fine by the Blue Streaks, who completed their regular season home schedule with an 8-1 mark in which they outscored the opposition by a 22-5 count.

With the 2-0 win over Baldwin-Wallace, the Blue Streaks now have an overall record of 12-6, including a 6-2 mark against OAC opponents. The Yellow Jackets fall to 10-8 on the season, including a 3-5 record against OAC opponents.
