John Carroll Struggles With Finishes In Loss To Case Reserve In Non-Conference Volleyball Clash

Gina Catania (#18) prepares to set up the JCU attack against the Case Reserve Spartans
It was not so much the starts but the finishes that foiled the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll played hard Wednesday night at home against Case Western Reserve, but could not avoid the sweep in falling 25-18 25-23 25-19.

Box Score

The scores certainly did not tell the full story.

JCU fell behind  early on but made a run, pulling to within a single point at 18-17.  The visiting Spartans used a 7-1 run to close out the frame. Kerry Fox and Sarah Slagle had nine kills combined in the first set.

Whatever mistakes the Streaks had made in game one seemed corrected in game two. As late as when the score stood 18-14 in JCU's favor, the Streaks appeared in command.

Yet again, it was a late run by Case that turned the tide quickly. Tied 23-23, the Spartans closed the set with two consecutive points. Fox, Laura Sudo and Julia Clark all had four kills and Jess Hammer had eight digs in what was JCU's best played game of the night.

John Carroll jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set, only to have Case score the next nine points. Case held a 17-10 lead but a 7-1 run had the Streaks close once again.

The visitors had one last run in them to put away the Blue Streaks.

Case improved to 13-6, while JCU fell to 8-12.
