Streaks Capitalize On Scoring Chances To Sweep Crusaders In Columbus

Ally Kleinhans made an impact with a solo home run in game two to help the Blue Streaks complete a sweep of Capital
On the rare occasions where scoring opportunities presented themselves Sunday afternoon, the John Carroll softball team cashed in often enough to where the Blue Streaks produced a sweep of host Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.

JCU won game one by a 2-1 count, then came back with a 6-4 victory in game two.

As an added bonus, the Blue Streaks ended the day in a first place tie with Ohio Northern in the league standings with eight games remaining.

Box Scores:  Game One  / Game Two

All three runs scored in the first game were unearned. In fact, John Carroll's two were the direct result of an error, as a misplayed fly ball in the outfield off the bat of Olivia Mathews plated both Blue Streaks runs in the top of the third inning.

That would be enough for starter Brittany Danilov, who allowed just one hit. That happened to also produce the lone Crusader run, a double by Courtney Dingess in the fifth.

That would be it, as Danilov -- who picked up her 400th career strikeout Wednesday -- worked all seven innings and allowed the one hit and run (unearned) while striking out nine and walking just three.

The win improved Danilov's record to 13-5.

In the nightcap, Samantha Becker started the offense with a two-run single in the second. But Capital knotted the game at 2-2 with single runs in the second and third.

JCU would start to pull away. After becker plated another run in the fourth, Ally Kleinhans upped the lead to 4-2 with a solo shot in the sixth.

Insurance runs were added in the seventh when Erin Riccardi and Angela Vistocco came through with RBI hits. The cushion was needed, as Capital cut its deficit to 6-4 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Trisha Pike put out the fire, coming into the game and earning her first save by recording a harmless pop up for the final out. Morgan Robinson earned her first collegiate win with four innings of relief.

JCU is now 20-8 overall and 8-2 (T-1st) in the OAC. That is tied with Ohio Northern for first place in the league standings.
